About Paired Texts
What this skill is
Paired text exercises present two different passages on the same subject (such as a personal diary entry and a historical encyclopedia article, or two opposing viewpoints on school uniforms) for students to analyze together.
When children learn it
Paired texts are introduced in late 3rd grade and become a major focus of 4th and 5th grade reading comprehension assessments.
Teaching Tips
- Label the passages "Text 1" and "Text 2", and write the source number next to each piece of notes.
- Have your child make a quick T-chart summarizing the main viewpoint of each passage before answering questions.
Common Mistakes
- Answering questions using information from only one passage while forgetting to check the second.
- Confusing which author made which specific claim or argument.
