About Sequence of Events
What this skill is
Sequence of events is the chronological order in which things happen in a story or informative process. Children practice identifying what happened first, next, then, and last to understand cause, effect, and narrative timeline.
When children learn it
Sequencing starts with three-picture story cards in kindergarten and progresses to ordering five or six complex text events in 2nd and 3rd grade.
Teaching Tips
- Highlight transitional time markers in the passage: words like "before", "suddenly", "later that afternoon", and "finally".
- Have your child number the story paragraphs with a pencil to trace the flow of time.
Common Mistakes
- Putting events in the order they were remembered rather than the order they occurred in the passage.
- Confusing middle plot complications with the final resolution.
