About Adding Endings
What this skill is
Adding inflectional suffixes requires applying orthographic rules: dropping silent e (hope -> hoping), doubling final consonants after short vowels (hop -> hopping), and changing y to i (happy -> happier).
When children learn it
Taught and mastered in 2nd and 3rd grade spelling conventions (CCSS 2.L.2.d, 3.L.2.e).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "1-1-1 Rule" for doubling: if a word has 1 syllable, 1 short vowel, and ends in 1 consonant (like HOP), DOUBLE the last letter before adding -ed or -ing (HOPPING). If not, don't double!
Common Mistakes
- Doubling consonants after long vowels (writing "hopp" for hope + ing).
- Not doubling consonants on short vowel words (writing "runing" instead of "running").
- Forgetting to drop silent e before vowel suffixes (writing "makeing" instead of "making").
