About Articles
What this skill is
Articles are special modifying words (a, an, the) that introduce nouns. "A" and "an" are indefinite articles referring to non-specific items, while "the" is a definite article pointing to a specific, identifiable person, place, or thing.
When children learn it
Using "a" and "the" is practiced orally in kindergarten and 1st grade. Choosing between "a" (before consonant sounds) and "an" (before vowel sounds) is formally taught and mastered in 1st and 2nd grade.
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Smooth Sound Rule": say "a apple" and notice how your throat has to stop and stutter. Then say "an apple" and feel how the letter n creates a smooth bridge. Testing the sound out loud prevents article errors on worksheets.
Common Mistakes
- Looking at spelling rather than sound, using "a" before words starting with silent h like "hour", or using "an" before "unicorn".
- Using "an" before consonant sounds, writing errors like "an book" or "an dog".
- Omitting articles entirely when writing in English, writing "I want apple" instead of "I want an apple".
