About Adding Three or More Numbers
What this skill is
Adding multiple addends teaches the associative property of addition, showing that grouping numbers in different pairs (such as spotting pairs that make 10) does not change the final sum.
When children learn it
Adding three single-digit numbers is introduced in 1st grade (CCSS 1.OA.A.2). Adding up to four two-digit numbers is taught in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.NBT.B.6).
Teaching Tips
- Tell your child to be a "Ten Hunter": look through the column of numbers to see if any two numbers make 10 (like 7 and 3, or 6 and 4). Draw a bracket connecting them and write 10. Adding the remaining numbers to 10 is fast and fun.
Common Mistakes
- Adding strictly in written order from left to right instead of looking for friendly pairs that make 10.
- Accidentally skipping one of the addends when calculating long vertical columns.
- Double-counting an addend that was already combined.
