About Addition with Number Lines

What this skill is

Number line addition models addition as forward movement along a continuous scale, reinforcing that adding increases distance from zero.

When children learn it

Using number lines to add within 10 and 20 is introduced in kindergarten and 1st grade, continuing into 2nd grade measurement models (CCSS 2.MD.B.6).

Teaching Tips

  • Tell your child the pencil is a little kangaroo: the kangaroo starts by sitting on the first number (like 4). It only counts when its feet actually jump forward to the next line: "Jump 1, jump 2, jump 3... landed on 7!".

Common Mistakes

  • Counting the starting tick mark as hop one instead of hopping forward first.
  • Hopping in the wrong direction (backward instead of forward).
  • Drawing uneven hop jumps that land between numbers.
