About Fact Families

What this skill is

A fact family is a set of four related arithmetic facts using the same three numbers (two addition and two subtraction equations, such as 3+4=7, 4+3=7, 7-4=3, and 7-3=4).

When children learn it

Understanding the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction through fact families is a core 1st and 2nd grade standard (CCSS 1.OA.B.4).

Teaching Tips

  • Draw a fact family roof: put the biggest number at the peak of the roof, and the two smaller numbers in the bottom corners. Remind your child that subtraction ALWAYS starts with the king at the top of the roof.

Common Mistakes

  • Starting subtraction equations with one of the smaller addends instead of the largest total number (writing 4 - 7 = 3).
  • Introducing a completely random fourth number that does not belong to the fact family.
  • Writing identical addition sentences instead of flipping the addends with the commutative property.
