About Line Graphs

What this skill is

A line graph tracks changes over continuous intervals of time by plotting data points on a coordinate grid and connecting them with line segments to display trends.

When children learn it

Taught in 4th and 5th grade science and mathematics to represent continuous time data and trends (CCSS 5.G.A.2).

Teaching Tips

  • Ask trend questions: "Is the line climbing up (increasing), going down (decreasing), or staying flat?". Connecting the slope of the line to physical hill climbing makes interpreting line graphs intuitive.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a line graph for categorical data where categories are not connected over time.
  • Plotting points off-scale or between incorrect coordinate lines.
  • Misinterpreting steepness of slopes as raw totals rather than rates of change.
