About Picture Graphs

What this skill is

A picture graph (pictograph) displays categorical data using pictures or icons, where each symbol represents a set quantity specified in a key (such as one star = 2 votes).

When children learn it

Organizing and interpreting picture graphs with single-unit keys begins in 1st grade (CCSS 1.MD.C.4), expanding to scaled keys in 2nd and 3rd grade (CCSS 2.MD.D.10, 3.MD.B.3).

Teaching Tips

  • Circle the key at the bottom with a red pen before answering any questions! Ask: "How much does one picture count for?". If it says 2, have your child skip count by twos: 2, 4, 6, 8.

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring the key and assuming each symbol always equals 1 unit.
  • Misinterpreting half-symbols in scaled pictographs (e.g., half a star when a star = 2 means 1).
  • Misaligning counted icons when comparing row lengths.
