About Probability

What this skill is

Probability measures the likelihood of an event occurring, expressed on a scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain), or as a ratio of favorable outcomes to total possible outcomes.

When children learn it

Qualitative likelihood begins in 3rd grade, expanding to numeric fractional probabilities (such as 3 out of 6, or 1/2) in 4th and 5th grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Use a bag of colored marbles: count the total marbles (10), count the red ones (3). Teach the probability fraction: "Target over Total" = 3/10. The bottom number is always the TOTAL number of possibilities.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing probability ratios as favorable over unfavorable outcomes instead of favorable over TOTAL outcomes.
  • Assuming past random trials influence future independent coin flips (the gambler's fallacy).
  • Struggling when spinner sectors are divided into unequal sizes.
