About Sorting and Classifying
What this skill is
Sorting and classifying involves identifying defining attributes and grouping physical items or drawings into mutually exclusive sets, establishing the logical foundation for data analysis.
When children learn it
Classifying objects into given categories and counting the number of objects in each category is a kindergarten standard (CCSS K.MD.B.3).
Teaching Tips
- Sort laundry socks or kitchen silverware: have your child state the sorting rule before beginning ("I am sorting by fork vs. spoon"). Stating the rule aloud keeps categorization consistent.
Common Mistakes
- Switching sorting rules halfway through (starting to sort by color, then switching to shape).
- Overlooking objects that belong to a category because of minor surface differences.
- Miscounting group totals after sorting is complete.
