Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Button Up Your Shirt" rule: all the decimal points must line up straight like buttons on a shirt! Put a decimal button in the top number, bottom number, and answer line before adding.
Common Mistakes
- Aligning numbers to the right margin instead of aligning decimal points (adding 4.2 and 1.35 as if 2 and 5 line up).
- Forgetting to drop the decimal point straight down into the final answer.
- Neglecting to annex placeholder zeros when numbers have differing decimal lengths.
