About Comparing Decimals
What this skill is
Comparing decimals evaluates the relative size of two decimal numbers by comparing digits from left to right across tenths, hundredths, and thousandths places.
When children learn it
Comparing decimals to hundredths begins in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.C.7). Comparing decimals to thousandths is taught in 5th grade (CCSS 5.NBT.A.3.b).
Teaching Tips
- Pad with zeros so both numbers have the same length: compare 0.4 and 0.125 by writing 0.4 as 0.400. Now ask: "Which is bigger, 400 thousandths or 125 thousandths?". Padding with zeros makes comparison instant.
Common Mistakes
- Thinking longer decimals are always larger, believing 0.125 is greater than 0.4 because 125 is bigger than 4.
- Comparing from right to left rather than left to right.
- Struggling when trailing zeros are omitted (like comparing 0.5 to 0.50).
