About Decimal Place Value
What this skill is
Decimal place value extends base-ten principles to values less than one: tenths (0.1), hundredths (0.01), and thousandths (0.001), where each position is 1/10 the value of the place to its left.
When children learn it
Reading and writing decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form is a major 5th grade standard (CCSS 5.NBT.A.3.a).
Teaching Tips
- Listen for the "THS" sound at the end: tens are big whole numbers (10, 20, 30), but tenTHS are tiny fraction slices (0.1). Point out that the decimal point says "and" when reading numbers aloud.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing tens with tenths, or hundreds with hundredths.
- Writing expanded forms incorrectly (writing 0.05 as 5/10).
- Thinking there is a "oneths" place right after the decimal point.
