About Decimals and Money

What this skill is

Money provides a concrete base-ten model for decimals: one dollar is 1.00, a dime is 0.10 (one tenth), and a penny is 0.01 (one hundredth).

When children learn it

Using decimal notation for money begins in 2nd and 3rd grade and connects formally to decimal place value in 4th grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Always write cents with two digits: explain that cents are pennies (hundredths of a dollar), so you always need two decimal places. 5 cents is $0.05, and 50 cents is $0.50.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing 5 cents as $0.5 instead of $0.05 (confusing 5 cents with 50 cents).
  • Using both the dollar sign ($) and cents sign (¢) simultaneously ($0.50¢).
  • Errors when making change from whole dollar bills.
