About Dividing Fractions

What this skill is

Dividing fractions calculates how many fractional pieces fit into a quantity or what share each portion receives, solved conceptually with models and algorithmically by multiplying by the reciprocal.

When children learn it

Dividing unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions is a core 5th grade standard (CCSS 5.NF.B.7).

Teaching Tips

  • Teach "Keep, Change, Flip": KEEP the first number, CHANGE division to multiplication, FLIP the second fraction upside down. For 3 ÷ 1/4: Keep 3, change to x, flip to 4/1 -> 3 x 4 = 12!

Common Mistakes

  • Flipping the wrong fraction (flipping the first number instead of the second divisor).
  • Confusing 4 ÷ 1/2 (which equals 8) with 1/2 ÷ 4 (which equals 1/8).
  • Forgetting to change the division sign to multiplication after flipping.
