About Equivalent Fractions
What this skill is
Equivalent fractions are different fractions that name the exact same quantity or point on a number line (such as 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8), generated by multiplying or dividing numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number.
When children learn it
Understanding equivalent fractions with visual models begins in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.NF.A.3). Generating equivalent fractions algebraically using multipliers is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "Golden Rule of Fractions": whatever you do to the top, you MUST do to the bottom! If you multiply the top by 3, you must multiply the bottom by 3. Keeping the top and bottom balanced creates an equal fraction.
Common Mistakes
- Multiplying only the numerator and forgetting to multiply the denominator.
- Adding the same number to top and bottom instead of multiplying (thinking 1/2 = 2/3 by adding 1 to each).
- Not realizing that equivalent fractions occupy the exact same spot on a number line.
