About Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
What this skill is
A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction (such as 2 1/3). An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator (such as 7/3), representing amounts greater than 1.
When children learn it
Introduced in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.B.3.b) and used routinely across 5th grade fraction computation.
Teaching Tips
- Teach the "C-Method": for 2 1/3, draw a C starting at the bottom denominator 3, curving around the whole number 2, up to the numerator 1. Multiply bottom times whole (3 x 2 = 6), then add the top (6 + 1 = 7) to get 7/3.
Common Mistakes
- Adding the denominator and whole number instead of multiplying when converting to improper fractions.
- Changing the denominator during conversions.
- Calculation slips when dividing numerator by denominator to find the whole number.
