About Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
What this skill is
Improper fractions have numerators greater than or equal to denominators (7/4). Mixed numbers combine whole numbers and proper fractions (1 3/4). Practice converts between both forms.
When children learn it
Mixed number conversions are taught in 4th and 5th grade, aligned to 4.NF.B.3.B.
Teaching Tips
- To convert mixed to improper: multiply whole by denominator, add numerator, keep same denominator (2 x 4 + 3 = 11 -> 11/4).
- Draw visual fraction models showing full whole circles.
Common Mistakes
- Errors in conversion algorithm (for 2 3/4: multiplying whole by numerator instead of denominator).
- Changing the denominator during conversion.
