About Units of Time
What this skill is
Units of time cover standard chronological measurement scales and their conversion factors: 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, and 365 days in a year.
When children learn it
Time relationships are introduced in 2nd grade and formalized as relative measurement conversions in 4th grade (CCSS 4.MD.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Keep a "Time Conversion Ladder" card on the desk: 1 min = 60 sec, 1 hr = 60 min, 1 day = 24 hr. Practice simple conversions: "If movie is 2 hours long, how many minutes is that? 60 + 60 = 120 minutes!".
Common Mistakes
- Thinking an hour has 100 minutes.
- Confusing how many weeks are in a year (52 weeks) vs. days in a year.
- Multiplying when converting smaller units to larger units instead of dividing.
