About Consonant Blends

What this skill is

A consonant blend is two or three consonants standing next to each other where every letter keeps its own sound, smoothly slid together. Examples include "bl" in blue, "gr" in grape, "st" in stop, and ending blends like "mp" in jump. Unlike digraphs, both sounds are clearly pronounced.

When children learn it

Beginning blends are taught in 1st grade after CVC words are secure. Ending blends (like -nd, -st, -lt) and three-letter blends (like str-, scr-) are practiced in late 1st through 3rd grade.

Teaching Tips

  • Have your child pronounce both consonant sounds individually before sliding them together: say /s/ ... /t/ ... /st/.
  • Use finger taps for each letter in the blend to ensure neither consonant gets skipped during spelling.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping the second consonant in a blend when reading or writing (reading "sop" instead of "stop", or "fag" instead of "flag").
  • Confusing blends with digraphs (treating "bl" as one single sound instead of two fast sounds).
