About Long Vowel and CVCe Words
What this skill is
CVCe words follow the pattern of consonant, vowel, consonant, and a silent e at the end (like "cake", "bike", and "home"). The final e does not make a sound; instead, it signals the preceding vowel to say its long name rather than its short sound.
When children learn it
The silent e rule is introduced in the middle of 1st grade and reinforced throughout 2nd grade. It is the primary way elementary students transition from reading short vowel words to long vowel words.
Teaching Tips
- Show side-by-side magic e word pairs: write "hop", add an "e" to make "hope", and read both aloud together.
- Call the final e "Magic E" or "Bossy E" and draw an arrow from the e leaping over the consonant to tap the vowel.
Common Mistakes
- Pronouncing the final e at the end of the word as an extra syllable (reading "make" as "may-kuh").
- Forgetting to change the vowel sound and reading "cap" when the word is "cape".
