What this skill is
Silent letters are written consonants in words that are not pronounced when spoken, such as the 'k' in knight, 'w' in write, 'b' in comb, or 'g' in gnat. Etymological silent letter combinations developed over centuries of English language history. Studying silent letter patterns prevents spelling mistakes and improves reading fluency for elementary students during spelling practice, dictation tests, vocabulary study, and phonics workshops.
When children learn it
Silent letter combinations kn- and wr- are introduced in 2nd grade spelling lists. In 3rd grade and 4th grade, lessons expand to silent-b (climb), silent-g (sign), silent-h (ghost), and silent-t (listen) patterns across spelling and vocabulary units, dictations, proofreading drills, and reading workshops.
