About Vowel Teams
What this skill is
A vowel team is two vowels working side by side to make one long vowel sound. Common examples include "ai" in rain, "ay" in play, "ee" in feet, "ea" in leaf, and "oa" in boat. Learning these pairs unlocks thousands of multi-syllable elementary words.
When children learn it
Common vowel teams like ee, ea, ai, and oa are taught in late 1st grade and 2nd grade, with practice extending into 3rd grade as students encounter varied vowel sounds like ea in "head" versus "meat".
Teaching Tips
- Teach position clues: "ai" lives in the middle of words (rain, train), while "ay" usually sits at the very end (day, play).
- Have your child highlight vowel teams in yellow before reading sentences aloud.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to sound out both vowels one after the other instead of pronouncing one long sound.
- Using "ai" at the end of a word instead of "ay" (writing "pla" + "i" instead of "play").
