What this skill is
The 5W questions form the bedrock of reading comprehension: Who (the people involved), What (the event that occurred), Where (the physical location), When (the time), and Why (the underlying reason or cause).
When children learn it
Answering literal who and what questions begins in 1st grade, while answering more complex when, where, and explanatory why questions is mastered in 2nd through 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
