What this skill is
Who, what, when, where, why (the 5 Ws) practice trains a child to answer comprehension questions by finding the answer in the passage rather than remembering or guessing it. Each worksheet pairs a short passage with questions asking for a person, place, time or reason straight from the text.
When children learn it
5 Ws questioning is taught from 2nd grade, building on Common Core standard RL.2.1 and RI.2.1 for asking and answering questions about key details in a text.
Teaching Tips
- Have your child point to the sentence in the passage that answers each question.
- Ask who and what first, since they are usually easier to find than why.
Common Mistakes
- Answering a where question with a time or a person.
- Confusing why (a reason) with what (an action or event).
