About Two-Digit Addition
What this skill is
Two-digit addition teaches adding 2-digit numbers vertically, starting in the ones column and carrying (regrouping) 10 ones as 1 ten into the tens column when ones sums exceed 9.
When children learn it
Two-digit addition without regrouping begins in 1st grade; regrouping is mastered in 2nd grade, aligned to 2.NBT.B.5.
Teaching Tips
- Always start adding in the right-hand ones column first.
- Write the carried 1 clearly above the tens column box.
Common Mistakes
- Adding the tens column first before the ones column.
- Forgetting to add the carried 1 ten at the top of the tens column.
