About Two-Digit Addition
What this skill is
Two-digit addition combines tens and ones columns. When the ones sum reaches ten or greater, students regroup ten ones into one ten and carry it to the tens column.
When children learn it
Adding two-digit numbers without regrouping begins in 1st grade (CCSS 1.NBT.C.4). Adding with regrouping up to 100 is mastered in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.NBT.B.5).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the rhyme: "If it's 9 or less, let it rest. If it's 10 or more, take 1 next door!". On worksheets, make sure your child writes the regrouped 1 right at the top of the tens column so it never gets forgotten.
Common Mistakes
- Adding from left to right and writing both digits of the ones sum in the ones column without regrouping (writing 35 + 28 = 513).
- Forgetting to add the carried one in the tens column after regrouping the ones.
- Regrouping when the ones sum is less than 10 because of habitual over-application.
