About Adding Fractions
What this skill is
Adding fractions combines parts of the same unit whole. Like denominators require adding numerators only, while unlike denominators require finding a common denominator before adding.
When children learn it
Adding fractions with like denominators is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.B.3). Adding fractions with unlike denominators using equivalent fractions is a 5th grade benchmark (CCSS 5.NF.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Use pizza language: if you have 1 slice of a 4-slice pizza and get 2 more slices, you have 3 slices of the 4-slice pizza (3/4), not 3/8! The denominator is the name of the slice and never changes during addition.
Common Mistakes
- Adding both the numerators AND the denominators together (writing 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8 instead of 2/4).
- Adding unlike fractions without converting to a common denominator first.
- Forgetting to simplify the final sum or convert improper fractions to mixed numbers.

To add or subtract fractions with different denominators, first rewrite both fractions so they share the same denominator. Then add or subtract the tops and keep the bottom the same. Short sessions with printable adding fractions worksheets give your child the repetition that makes the routine automatic.
