What this skill is

Comparing fractions determines which fraction represents a greater portion of a whole using visual models, benchmark fractions (0, 1/2, 1), common numerators, or common denominators.

When children learn it

Comparing fractions with like numerators or like denominators begins in 3rd grade (CCSS 3.NF.A.3.d). Comparing fractions with unlike denominators is mastered in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.A.2).

Teaching Tips

  • Use benchmark 1/2: for 3/8 and 4/6, ask: "Is 3/8 more or less than half? (Less, because half of 8 is 4). Is 4/6 more or less than half? (More, because half of 6 is 3). So 4/6 must be bigger!". Benchmark comparison avoids lengthy math.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying whole number logic, thinking 1/9 is bigger than 1/4 because 9 is bigger than 4.
  • Comparing fractions of different sized wholes (half a grape vs. half a watermelon).
  • Errors during cross-multiplication butterfly checks.
