About Equal Parts
What this skill is
Understanding equal parts establishes the fundamental definition of fractions: a whole shape must be partitioned into sections of identical size and area for fractional names to apply.
When children learn it
Partitioning circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares begins in 1st grade (CCSS 1.G.A.3) and expands to thirds and equal share concepts in 2nd grade (CCSS 2.G.A.3).
Teaching Tips
- Fold paper coffee filters or rectangular paper towels: fold in half and show that the two sides match perfectly. Then fold unequally and ask: "Is that a fair share for sharing a cookie?". The idea of "fair shares" makes equal parts intuitive.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming any shape split with lines has equal parts, ignoring that some slices are noticeably larger than others.
- Confusing the number of cuts with the number of pieces (making 2 cuts creates 3 pieces).
- Believing equal parts must look identical in shape, even when different shapes have equal area.
