About Fractions and Decimals
What this skill is
Fractions and decimals represent the same rational values in two different notation systems, built on base-ten denominators like tenths (0.1 = 1/10) and hundredths (0.01 = 1/100).
When children learn it
Connecting decimal notation to fractions with denominators 10 and 100 is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.C.6) and expanded to thousandths in 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Think of money: a dime is 1/10 of a dollar ($0.10), and a penny is 1/100 of a dollar ($0.01). Connecting tenths to dimes and hundredths to pennies makes decimal-fraction conversions instantly clear.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing tenths and hundredths, writing 3/10 as 0.03 instead of 0.3.
- Writing 7/100 as 0.7 instead of 0.07.
- Struggling to convert non-base-ten fractions like 1/4 or 1/2 to decimals.
