About Fractions on a Number Line
What this skill is
Placing fractions on a number line represents fractions as numbers with magnitude and continuous position between whole integers, reinforcing that a fraction is a single number, not two.
When children learn it
Representing fractions on a number line from 0 to 1 is a central 3rd grade standard (CCSS 3.NF.A.2) continuing beyond 1 in 4th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Tell your child to count the "hops" (the segments) between 0 and 1, not the vertical sticks. If there are 4 hops between 0 and 1, each hop is 1/4. Count: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 (which is 1!).
Common Mistakes
- Counting tick marks between 0 and 1 instead of counting the interval spaces.
- Plotting fractions beyond 1 when they are less than 1 because of incorrect scale reading.
- Dividing the space between 0 and 1 into uneven segments.
