About Multiplying Fractions
What this skill is
Multiplying fractions calculates a fraction of a fraction (such as 1/2 x 1/3 = 1/6), executed by multiplying numerators together and denominators together.
When children learn it
Multiplying fractions by whole numbers is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.B.4). Multiplying fractions by fractions using area models and equations is a major 5th grade standard (CCSS 5.NF.B.4).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the straight-across rule: "Multiplying fractions is no big problem, just multiply top times top and bottom times bottom!". Remind your child they never need common denominators to multiply.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to find a common denominator before multiplying (common denominators are only for addition and subtraction!).
- Multiplying a whole number by both numerator and denominator (doing 3 x 2/5 = 6/15 instead of 6/5).
- Failing to simplify cross-factors before multiplying.
