About Simplifying Fractions
What this skill is
Simplifying fractions (reducing to lowest terms) divides both numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor until their only shared factor is 1.

Teaching Tips
- If both numbers are even, always start by cutting them in half (divide by 2). Keep dividing by 2, 3, or 5 until you cannot divide anymore. Reducing in small bites makes simplifying effortless.
Common Mistakes
- Stopping before the fraction is fully reduced (reducing 8/24 to 4/12 and thinking it is finished).
- Dividing the numerator and denominator by different numbers.
- Thinking a fraction cannot be simplified if both numbers are large.
