About Subtracting Fractions
What this skill is
Subtracting fractions calculates the difference between parts of a whole. Subtracting mixed numbers often requires borrowing 1 from the whole number and converting it into a fraction (such as 3 1/4 becoming 2 5/4).
When children learn it
Subtracting like fractions begins in 4th grade (CCSS 4.NF.B.3). Subtracting unlike fractions and mixed numbers with borrowing is mastered in 5th grade (CCSS 5.NF.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- When borrowing in mixed numbers, remember you borrow ONE WHOLE: one whole in fourths is 4/4! Add the 4/4 to the 1/4 you already had to get 5/4. Remind your child to borrow the denominator, not ten.
Common Mistakes
- Subtracting denominators (writing 3/4 - 1/4 = 2/0).
- Subtracting fractions backwards when top fraction is smaller than bottom fraction in mixed numbers.
- Borrowing 10 instead of borrowing the denominator when regrouping mixed numbers (turning 3 1/4 into 2 11/4 instead of 2 5/4).
