About 3D Shapes
What this skill is
Three-dimensional (3D) shapes are solid figures with length, width, and height. Students identify cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, and prisms, counting faces, edges, and vertices.
When children learn it
3D shapes are introduced in kindergarten and expanded through 3rd grade, aligned to K.G.A.2 and 2.G.A.1.
Teaching Tips
- Hold physical wooden 3D blocks while counting flat faces, straight edges, and corner points.
- Distinguish flat 2D shapes (square) from 3D solid shapes (cube).
Common Mistakes
- Confusing 2D flat shape names with 3D solid names (calling a cube a square).
- Miscounting hidden faces or vertices on 3D shape drawings.
