About Transformations
What this skill is
Geometric transformations move a figure across a plane without altering its size or shape: translations (slides), reflections (flips across a line), and rotations (turns around a point).
When children learn it
Introduced informally in 3rd and 4th grade and formalized in 5th grade coordinate geometry.
Teaching Tips
- Use physical cut-out paper shapes: SLIDE it along the table for translation; FLIP it over like a pancake for reflection; SPIN it around your fingertip for rotation. Connecting hand actions to math words makes transformations easy.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing a reflection (mirror flip) with a rotation (spin turn).
- Changing the size of the shape during transformation.
- Misidentifying the direction or angle degree of rotation.
