About Circles
What this skill is
A circle is a round plane figure whose boundary consists of points equidistant from a fixed center point, characterized by its radius (center to edge) and diameter (edge to edge through center).
When children learn it
Informal circle parts are introduced in 3rd and 4th grade, with formal radius-diameter relationships (d = 2r) and circumference concepts taught in 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Notice word length: "Radius" is a shorter word, so it goes halfway across from the center. "Diameter" is a longer word, so it goes ALL the way across through the middle!
Common Mistakes
- Confusing radius (halfway across) with diameter (all the way across).
- Thinking a chord that does not pass through the center can be called a diameter.
- Calculation slips when doubling the radius or halving the diameter.
