About Polygons
What this skill is
A polygon is a closed two-dimensional plane figure formed by three or more straight line segments that intersect only at endpoints, named by Greek prefixes for side count.
When children learn it
Recognizing shapes based on specified attributes like side count is taught in 2nd and 3rd grade (CCSS 2.G.A.1, 3.G.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Connect names to real life: an OCTopus has 8 tentacles, so an OCTagon has 8 sides like a stop sign. A HEXagon has an "x" in its name just like the number "six"!
Common Mistakes
- Calling an open figure with gaps a polygon.
- Including shapes with curved edges (like circles or semicircles) in polygon lists.
- Confusing hexagons (6 sides) and octagons (8 sides).
