About Symmetry
What this skill is
Line symmetry occurs when a figure can be folded along a line into two matching mirror-image halves that coincide exactly.
When children learn it
Recognizing a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure is a 4th grade standard (CCSS 4.G.A.3).
Teaching Tips
- Use a small handheld pocket mirror: place the mirror edge directly along the fold line. If the reflection in the mirror looks identical to the original complete shape, the line is a true line of symmetry!
Common Mistakes
- Thinking any line dividing a shape into two equal areas is a line of symmetry (e.g., a diagonal line across a non-square rectangle).
- Missing multiple lines of symmetry in regular polygons like squares or hexagons.
- Drawing reflection halves shifted instead of mirrored.
