About Perimeter
What this skill is
Perimeter is the continuous linear boundary distance surrounding a two-dimensional shape, calculated by summing all outer side lengths together.
When children learn it
Solving real-world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons is a 3rd grade standard (CCSS 3.MD.D.8) continuing through 5th grade.
Teaching Tips
- Tell your child to imagine an ant walking along the outside fence of the yard: the ant must walk along every single outer side and add up the steps. If a rectangle shows length 8 and width 3, the ant walks: 8 + 3 + 8 + 3 = 22!
Common Mistakes
- Multiplying side lengths instead of adding them (confusing perimeter with area).
- Forgetting unlabelled sides on rectangles or regular polygons.
- Adding internal boundary lines when calculating perimeter of composite shapes.
