About Classifying Triangles
What this skill is
Triangles are classified by side lengths (equilateral: 3 equal sides, isosceles: 2 equal sides, scalene: no equal sides) and by angles (acute: all < 90°, right: one 90° angle, obtuse: one > 90° angle).
When children learn it
Classifying two-dimensional figures based on the presence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence of angles of a specified size, is a 4th grade standard (CCSS 4.G.A.2).
Teaching Tips
- Check the sides with a ruler and check the angles with the corner of an index card. If the corner fits exactly, it has a RIGHT angle. If it has 2 equal sides, it is ISOSCELES. Giving every triangle two names (one for sides, one for angles) ensures complete answers.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing isosceles (two equal sides) and scalene (all different sides).
- Thinking a triangle can have more than one right angle or obtuse angle.
- Forgetting that every triangle has two classification names (e.g., right isosceles triangle).
