About Volume
What this skill is
Volume measures the amount of three-dimensional space enclosed by a solid, quantified in cubic units (cubic inches, cubic centimeters) using unit cube stacking or the formula Volume = length x width x height.
When children learn it
Recognizing volume as an attribute of solid figures and calculating rectangular prism volume using multiplication and addition is a core 5th grade standard (CCSS 5.MD.C.3, 5.MD.C.5).
Teaching Tips
- Build a solid building with wooden blocks: build a base layer of 3 by 4 blocks (12 blocks). Then add a second and third layer. Say: "12 blocks on the bottom, 3 layers high... 12 x 3 = 36 cubic units!". Seeing layers makes the volume formula obvious.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing area (square units) with volume (cubic units).
- Miscounting hidden unit cubes in 3D perspective drawings.
- Adding length, width, and height instead of multiplying them.
