About Measuring Angles
What this skill is
An angle measures geometric rotation between two rays sharing a common vertex, quantified in degrees (from 1° to 360°) using a semicircular protractor.
When children learn it
Measuring angles in whole-number degrees using a protractor and sketching angles of specified measure is a core 4th grade standard (CCSS 4.MD.C.6).
Teaching Tips
- Estimate FIRST before reading the numbers: ask your child "Is this angle sharp and acute (less than 90°), or wide and obtuse (more than 90°)?". If they know it is acute, they will never accidentally read the 130° scale.
Common Mistakes
- Reading the wrong scale on a two-scale protractor (reading 50° as 130° for an acute angle).
- Not placing the center hole of the protractor directly on the vertex of the angle.
- Not aligning one ray with the baseline 0° mark.
