About Types of Angles
What this skill is
Angles are classified relative to a 90° right angle: acute (less than 90°), right (exactly 90°), obtuse (between 90° and 180°), and straight (exactly 180°).
When children learn it
Recognizing angles as geometric shapes and classifying them by size relative to right angles is taught in 4th grade (CCSS 4.G.A.1, 4.MD.C.5).
Teaching Tips
- Use an index card corner: the corner of an index card is an exact 90° right angle square. Slide the card into the angle: if the rays hide behind the card, it is acute ("a cute small angle"). If they spread wider than the card, it is obtuse!
Common Mistakes
- Judging angle size by the length of drawn rays rather than the opening between rays.
- Confusing acute (small opening) and obtuse (wide opening).
- Not recognizing right angles that are tilted obliquely.
