About Naming 2D Shapes

What this skill is

Two-dimensional (flat) shapes are closed plane figures bounded by straight lines or curves, classified by side counts and corner attributes.

When children learn it

Correctly naming shapes regardless of orientation or overall size is a core kindergarten standard (CCSS K.G.A.2).

Teaching Tips

  • Turn the worksheet upside down! Show your child that a triangle is STILL a triangle with 3 sides even when its point aims down or sideways. Orientation never changes a shape's true name.

Common Mistakes

  • Not recognizing triangles that are inverted, long, or skinny.
  • Thinking a square turned on its corner stops being a square and becomes a "diamond".
  • Confusing rectangles and squares, not realizing all squares are special rectangles.
