About Perimeter
What this skill is
Perimeter measures total distance around the outside boundary of a 2D shape, calculated by adding the lengths of all outer sides together (P = side1 + side2 + ...).
When children learn it
Perimeter is taught in 3rd through 5th grade, aligned to Common Core standard 3.MD.D.8.
Teaching Tips
- Label every single outer side length before adding.
- Trace the outer boundary line with a finger while summing side lengths.
Common Mistakes
- Omitting unlabeled opposite sides on rectangles when adding total perimeter.
- Multiplying side lengths instead of adding them together.
