About Lines, Rays and Segments

What this skill is

Linear elements include lines (infinite both ways), line segments (two endpoints), and rays (one endpoint). Relationships include parallel (never cross), perpendicular (cross at 90 degrees), and intersecting.

When children learn it

Lines, rays, and line relationships are taught in 3rd and 4th grade, aligned to 4.G.A.1.

Teaching Tips

  • Draw double arrows for lines, dots for line segments, and one arrow for rays.
  • Check for square right angles where perpendicular lines cross.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing line segment (fixed endpoints) with infinite line (arrows on both ends).
  • Failing to recognize perpendicular lines that do not sit horizontally.
