About Lines, Rays and Segments
What this skill is
Lines continue infinitely in both directions (two arrows). Rays have one fixed endpoint and extend infinitely in one direction (one arrow). Line segments have two definite endpoints and measurable length.
When children learn it
Drawing and identifying points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines is a foundational 4th grade standard (CCSS 4.G.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Use flashlight imagery: a flashlight beam starts at the bulb (endpoint) and shoots out into space forever with one arrow (a RAY). A line segment is like a piece of string cut with scissors on both ends (two endpoints).
Common Mistakes
- Confusing rays and line segments, drawing arrows on both ends of a segment.
- Naming rays in reverse order (the endpoint must ALWAYS be written first in ray notation).
- Confusing parallel lines (never cross) with perpendicular lines (cross at 90°).
