About Properties of 2D Shapes
What this skill is
Properties of 2D shapes are the defining attributes (number of straight sides, number of angles or vertices) that determine a shape's geometric classification regardless of color, size, or orientation.
When children learn it
Distinguishing between defining attributes (sides, vertices) and non-defining attributes (color, size) is taught in 1st and 2nd grade (CCSS 1.G.A.1, 2.G.A.1).
Teaching Tips
- Put a little dot with a pencil on each corner (vertex) as you count it: 1, 2, 3, 4. Putting dots on corners stops your child from counting the same corner twice.
Common Mistakes
- Counting corners twice or skipping corners when counting around a polygon.
- Thinking a curved shape like an oval has vertices.
- Classifying shapes by non-defining attributes like color or pattern.
