About The Coordinate Plane
What this skill is
The coordinate plane uses perpendicular horizontal (x-axis) and vertical (y-axis) number lines intersecting at the origin (0,0) to specify locations using ordered pairs (x, y).
When children learn it
Defining a coordinate system and graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane is a benchmark 5th grade standard (CCSS 5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2).
Teaching Tips
- Teach the airplane or elevator rule: "You must run down the runway (x-axis) before you can fly up into the air (y-axis)!". Or: "Walk into the elevator (x), then ride it up to your floor (y)". Always go over before going up.
Common Mistakes
- Reversing the coordinates, plotting (y, x) instead of (x, y).
- Starting at the edge of the paper instead of starting at origin (0, 0).
- Moving vertically before moving horizontally.
